Barton & Steven Woomert Description
The Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra opens its 40th Season with Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.1, Ronald Royer’s Fantasy Variations on a Gregorian Chant with Barton Woomert on Trumpet and Steven Woomert on Flugelhorn, and Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony.
Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 1, among Brahms most popular works, is from a set of 21 lively dance tunes opens this concert. Barton and Steven Woomert come to us from Toronto, Canada to perform Ronald Royer’s Fantasy Variations on a Gregorian Chant for Trumpet, Flugelhorn, and Chamber Orchestra. The work is a set of variations for two similar, but tonally different, instruments and small orchestra. Mr. Royer will also be in attendance at this concert.
The concert ends with Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, which he began writing during a trip to Scotland. This piece is both dark and stormy, and joyous, a beautiful contradiction. Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony is one of the most popular works to come out of the central-European, romantic tradition. |
