Description
The Baldwin Players will present an updated version of this classic Greek comedy that was first performed in Athens in 414 B.C. This play is a satire and also a farce all dressed up as a fantasy, with some singing, some dancing, and a lot of comic hijinks! It is the tale of two con men from Athens who reject their world of politics, poetry, religion, and business and travel to the land where the birds dwell. There they set out to persuade the birds to set up their own kingdom, “Cloudcuckooland,” challenge the gods, and establish their own supremacy on earth. The Birdshas a lot to say about what it means to be “civilized,” even to a 21st century American audience, but in the end it doesn’t really matter what it says, because it says it so amusingly.
