Angela Teek Description
Angela is a world-class, vivacious stage personality who uses her 3-octave range with incredible ease and exceptional flare. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she began her career in Southern California studying with teacher/mentor, showbiz veteran Leonard Reed. She was soon cast as Charlaine in “Aint Misbehavin” starring Hinton Battle at the Sahara Hotel. Subsequently, she returned to Los Angeles to perform multiple roles for director Robert Townsend in his breakthrough film, “Hollwood Shuffle” and then was cast opposite Mark Harmon in NBC’s “Sweet Bird of Youth” starring Elizabeth Taylor.
After headlining numerous cruises, Angela appeared on the original “Star Search” hosted by Ed McMahon where she was undefeated for 10 consecutive weeks winning the $100,000 grand prize as female vocalist champion. Legendary producer David Merrick took notice and cast her in the leading role of Kay in George Gershwin’s musical, “Oh Kay” and she also played Sara in the Tony Award-winning musical “Ragtime”.
She went on to perform with the Roanoke Symphony where she broke all attendance records in an hour-long tribute to Gershwin and Cole Porter. She was Don Rickle’s opening act in an extended Las Vegas engagement at the Golden Nugget Hotel, she then returned to the Sahara Hotel in the musical “Beehive”.
Angela has appeared on a number of television shows and continued performing on stage in leading roles such as “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and ”You Never Know” (for which she was nominated for an NAACP Best Supporting Performance Award), and, as a featured vocalist with the highly-acclaimed international dance production show “Burn the Floor”. Her recordings include her debut album “Steppin’ Out”, the Broadway cast album of “Ragtime”, the world-premiere cast album of “You Never Know”. Michelle Kwan’s Disney Special soundtrack and featured vocalist on acclaimed composer John Adams’ CD, “I Was Looking At The Ceiling And Then I Saw the Sky”. Angela has performed leading roles in “Sophisticated Ladies”, the world premiere of “Ray Charles Live”, at the Pasadena playhouse directed by Sheldon Epps, the world premiere of “The Princess And The Black-Eyed Pea” at the San Diego rep she also played the role of Marie Knight in the world premiere of “Shout Sister Shout”, and the role of Justice in the Toronto company of “Rock Of Ages”.
Angela can also be heard as the voice of Viv the neighbor lady and Mama Bear on the PBS cartoon “Peg + Cat”
