Chabot College's Music Department presents the first of their Summer Jazz Concerts featuring the Guido Fazio Quintet! Guido Fazio is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area studied jazz improvisation and co-authored a book with his mentor and author of multiple instructional books, the late jazz guitarist, Warren Nunes. Guido has been teaching for more than 30 years and has surpassed 3,000 students to date. Besides being an outstanding improviser, Guido is a composer and arranger for big bands, small ensembles, duets and solo pieces that includes classical, jazz, pop, Gospel, and ethnic styles. Guido has been a woodwind clinician for students from elementary school through college level, including jazz improvisation clinics at local college and high school festivals. His music literature includes classical, jazz classics, big band, The American Song Book, Afro-Cuban, country, folk, pop, Italian, Jewish, Portuguese, and South American styles. Guido has performed with and backed entertainers and renowned jazz artists, including Steve Allen, Phyllis Diller, Mel Torme, Patsy Cline, Sarah Vaughn, Rich Little, Louis Bellson, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Bill Watrous, Phil Woods, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bruce Forman and Gordon Goodwin About Chabot College Jazz The Jazz Studies program has attained national recognition for several decades. It has garnered awards from the Reno Jazz Festival, the Pacific Coast Jazz Festival, the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Through the years, the Chabot Jazz Ensembles have performed all over the U.S., including several trips to Japan. Designed as an integral part if the Jazz Studies area, the Jazz Combos develop aspiring young musicians to enhance their ability to improvise in a small ensemble setting. Throughout the semester, these combos focus on literature reflecting several jazz styles from the swing to contemporary styles. The Chabot College Jazz Studies program covers very unique offerings, including Jazz Piano, Jazz theory, and improvisation, as well as numerous award-winning Jazz ensembles on many levels. Through the decades, some of the ensembles have accompanied such greats as Rosemary Clooney, Mel Tormè, Delfeayo Marsalis, Doc Severinsen, Ledisi, Ernie Watts, Bobby Shew, Steve Turre, Lew Soloff, Gordon Goodwin, Steve Allen, Matt Catingub, Jamey Aebersold, Patti Page, Snooky Young, Conrad Herwig, Peter Erskine, Bob Sheppard, and Pete Christlieb. The Jazz Studies department has several accomplished alumni including: Dave Garibaldi (Drums) performed with Tower of Power, Frank Sumares (Piano) performed with Jamey Aebersold and Bill Watrous, Ledisi (Vocalist) recording artist for Verve Records, Thomas Morgan (Bass) recording artist, Mic Gillette (Trumpet) performed with Tower of Power, Jeff Prinz (Saxophone) performed and recorded with Rosemary Clooney, Steve Bowman (Drums) performed with rock band Counting Crows, Donald Kennelly (Trombone) performing with the San Francisco Opera, Matt Fenders (Trombone) performing with Jay Leno’s Tonight Show, David Enos (Bass) performed with Arturo Sandoval and David Bennoit, and Frank Martin (piano/composer/arranger) performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, John Handy, Ramsey Lewis, Joe, and the Slide Hampton Big Band.
