Tierra Description
This Latin R&B band was formed in the Mexican-populated east Los Angeles area in 1971 by the Salas Brothers, Rudy (vocals/guitar) and Steve (trombone/timbales). The remainder of the line-up comprised Bobby Navarrete (reeds), Joey Guerra (keyboards), Steve Falomir (bass), Philip Madayag (drums), and Andre Baeza (percussion). Before forming Tierra, the members were veterans of various groups in the East LA music scene. The Salas brothers had recorded as a duet in the early 60s, hitting with many local records, notably ‘Darling Please Bring Home Your Love’, and played alongside Baeza in the popular El Chicano. Tierra’s highly catchy blend of R&B, salsa and pop made them a prime live attraction, but after several years with little commercial success they finally charted in 1980 with a Top 20 cover version of the Intruders’ ‘Together’.
