One woman’s annual holiday cabaret show is interrupted by a gaggle of Christmas misfits, who have been forced out of the North Pole due to global warming, and are finding their way in NYC for the first time.
It’s December in NYC, and the holiday season is upon us. The streets sparkle with K-Mart twinkly lights, the Rockefeller tree stands sturdy and stoic, the Union Square Holiday Market serves $6 miniature cups of hot apple cider. While most all of these traditions have grown old on jaded, clad-in-black New Yorkers, Jenna is emerging into her annual prime, ready to spread the cheer, holly jolly-ness, and hot cocoa. But this year, there’s a bitch. One. Big. Bitch. Global warming is destroying The North Pole, the epicenter of Christmas. The home to all of our beloved holiday friends is melting away, and there’s nothing they can do about it. In a heroic gesture, Santa Claus sent every single inhabitant of The Pole down to New York City in order to find shelter in a safer home. He guided them toward Jenna, for he knew she would be the best-suited NYC resident to take care of them until Santa himself could make it down to the city. Entirely caught off guard, Jenna finds herself guiding these misfits as they emerge in New York City for the first time, and - ultimately - discover that we are all utterly invaluable to this ever so special season.
Jenna Dioguardi created A Merry Little Evening as a student at Playwrights Horizons Theater School (NYU/Tisch). It is a product of her sheer love and obsession with the holiday season. She hails from Westchester, New York, where her childhood home’s Christmas light show served as the backdrop for a few of the shots in Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas is You music video. This is not a joke! Jenna strives to squeeze every ounce of joy out of the season as she possibly can, and she thanks her family for giving her the opportunity every year to sit in their garage and test out each lighbulb on the various strings of christmas lights.
