Houston Theatre Company Converts Great Movies Into Great Musicals
Movies like “Sunset Boulevard,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Lord of the Flies,” and “Tarzan” have become musicals thanks to Bayou City Theatrics. Audiences in Houston can see these innovative productions live at The Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center, 705 Main St.
Bayou City Theatrics has been performing since 2012. The scope of its productions is evident when you look at this list of its past shows, which includes innumerable great musicals and even reproductions of “Charlie Brown” television shows.
The Houston Press reported in this 2015 article that it was very impressed by Bayou City Theatrics’ vision in producing big dramas in a small theatre and its capacity for producing a prodigious amount of entertainment.
“This three-year- old company, headed by Colton Berry, is limitless in its desire to put on a show,” the Houston Press reported. “Every other week, it seems, they're producing another one.
This year alone they've done “Metamorphoses,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “South Pacific,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “The Wiz.” Like the Little Engine That Could, BCT goes for the gold, plugging away undaunted by the challenges.”
Bayou City Theatrics’ 2016 schedule could surpass its impressive 2015 schedule. It is performing “The Wedding Singer” from Feb. 11 to Feb. 21, “A Streetcar Named Desire” from March 4 to 20,
“The Whale” from April 8 to April 24, and “Parade” from May 13 to 29. Purplepass is selling tickets to all four productions at this website.
Bayou City Theatrics also offers one-on- one acting, dance, and voice lessons and regularly conducts auditions for people who are interested in performing in its productions.
